Low morale is an instant drain on productivity and something that should be avoided at all costs. If you are a manager or business owner that has noticed the temperament of your employees turning sour, it may be time to carry out some damage control with these tips to improve morale and prevent future catastrophes.

Identify Problematic Areas

Until the causes of low morale are identified, almost nothing can be done about it. It is important to begin speaking with employees, other managers, or even customers to see exactly where the ill-feelings are coming from. This is also a great time to really listen to employees which is often a major point of contention between management and lower-level employees.

Known When to Reward Privately and publicly

Rewards should be a part of every workplace, but it is vital to know when an individual should be rewarded, when an entire team or department should be rewarded, and how to do this appropriately. In most situations, giving a single employee accolades can cause feelings of ill will, especially if morale is already low. A private email or personal conversation is much more effective for personal commendations.

Show Company-Wide Appreciation

When managers are ready to show appreciation to larger teams or reward an entire department, it is the perfect opportunity to make the celebration as public and lavish as possible. Renting out a location from a place that provides great company party venues, bringing in vendors, and taking a few hours out of a work day could turn the entire company’s morale around. A company that celebrates its accomplishments together will quickly develop a sense of camaraderie and community.

 Create Advancement Opportunities

When employees feel as if they are stuck in a job with no future they will almost always have feelings of despair. Business owners and managers should make every attempt possible to promote employees internally instead of seeking an outside higher for new positions. The idea of a promotion in the near future will make employees more responsive to constructive criticism.

 Keep Lines of Communication Open

Most businesses say that they are all about open lines of communication, but this habit is much easier in theory than it is in practice. Managers and owners should have tangible methods in which they can be contacted and should be responsive to the concerns of their employees. An unapproachable manager will almost always result in their employees talking behind their back or becoming disgruntled.

If office morale has become a problem in your company, it is important to get proactive about coming up with solutions to improve their temperament and avoid these types of situations in the future.
