The Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi yesterday commenced the process of contesting for a second term by obtaining the expression of interest and nomination form to seek re-election as governor of the state.
The governor who presented a Zenith Bank cheque of N5.5 million to obtain the form at the national headquarters of the party in Abuja, said he is seeking to consolidate on the achievements of his administration.
Fayemi’s purchase of nomination form coincided with the confidence of the Labour Party (LP) governorship aspirant, Mr Bamidele Opeyemi, who predicted that his party would win the governorship polls in the state.
Speaking at the party’s headquarters shortly after the purchase of the form, Fayemi warned the people of the state to be wary of politicians who are desperate to grab power at all cost.
The governor charged the Ekiti electorate not to be swayed by the deception of some people who are seeking power in the state so they can impede the developmental gains which his administration has achieved in the last three years.
While expressing appreciation to the leadership of APC for allowing him to seek a second term in office, the governor said the party’s vote of confidence is a confirmation of the good works of the administration in the state.
” The holding of the primaries was a confirmation of the party’ s resolve to keep to due process. It is very clear to the blind and resounding in the ears of the deaf that APC is the government in the waiting in Aso Rock,” he said. Fayemi observed a minute silence in memory of young applicants who lost their lives during the ill-fated recruitment exercise by the Nigerian Immigration Service.
He urged Nigerians to reject the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the coming general election, stressing that the mishandling of the Immigration recruitment exercise was a clear sign of incompetence.
“My excitement today is tempered by the horrific news that we have received in the last few days, of the death of scores of young people who sought for employment but were given death by the federal government.
“The very inhumane treatment meted to our young people nationwide in the course of the recently conducted recruitment exercise of the Nigerian Immigration Service is a sad commentary to the degree of incompetence that pervades our federal government under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ” he said.
Earlier, the National Secretary of APC, Alhaji Tijani Tumnsa described the forthcoming governorship election in Ekiti State as a test case for APC which will prove to Nigerians how prepared the party is to swing victory in its favour during the 2015 elections.
“We had reviewed and done our investigations and evaluations and have seen that Fayemi is a representative of the ideology of the APC in Nigeria.
While accepting the cheque from Fayemi, the Interim National Organizing Secretary, Mr. Osita Izunaso said the party will be transparent in the conduct of the primaries the same way it did during the membership registration.
He said the APC had fixed the timetable for the Ekiti governorship primaries for April 12, adding that the process for the primaries will begin with the ward congresses on the March 29, local government congress on the April 1st and the state congress on April 5.
Meanwhile, the State LP governorship aspirant, Mr. Opeyemi has vowed to lead the party to victory in the state governorship election scheduled for June 21.
Speaking after submitting his nomination form at the Party’s headquarters in Abuja, Opayemi said from every indication, LP is the party to beat in the Ekiti governorship contest.
“Labour party is one party in Ekiti State that you can really sit back and say that you are sure of victory in the June 21 governorship election in Ekiti. I have led a team from Ekiti to most respectfully present myself for the governorship election in Ekiti State on the platform of Labour Party”, he said.
Continuing, he said, “For us in Ekiti it is not just about contesting election we believe that the state needs a critical, intervention. We want all Ekiti people to join hands to rescue the state from the hands of a few cabal who think the state belongs to them alone,”.
While receiving the aspirant, the National Chairman of Labour Party, Chief Dan Nwanyanwu, said leadership has been monitoring the activities of the state chapter, adding that with the kind of speed the leaders had accomplished in the restructuring of the party, the road to the government house in Ekiti will be an easy one.
