Who am I? This is a question that we often ask ourselves and we can’t really have a fulfilled life until we provide answers to this question. There are five facts I believe can assist you in the process of knowing yourself. As you go through them, I want you to ask yourself questions and provide answers to each of them. You are what you consistently do: this is the first fact I want to establish in your heart because it is the fact upon which all other facts which we will discuss in this article are based. Aristotle rightly remarked “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act but a habit”. Show me a man with a poor man’s habit and I will show you he is indeed a poor man. Successful people don’t become successful in one day. They become that way overtime by doing what they need to do rather than what they want to do. A wise man once said that Self discipline is doing what you have to do, when you have to do it, whether you feel like it or not. if you want to know whether or not you will be successful, just examine your habits, the things you do on a daily basis.
You are what you think about: the mind is where a man is formed. A prince with a slave’s mindset is no better than a slave. Small, irrelevant people have achieved great things in life because of their thoughts. The mind is our idea factory. Great inventions and profitable businesses are all formed in the mind. Do you have a healthy mind? Are you always positive or negative? Do you believe in yourself? What do you think about? Are your thoughts relevant to your mission on earth? Think on these things. Thomas Edison, a man considered as one of the smartest people that have ever lived had a great mind. Apart from genius, he had patience, persistence and resilience, these are all qualities developed in the mind. Transformation also takes place from the mind. If you want to experience true change, it needs to come from the inside and reflect on the outside. You are what you think about. What is going on in your mind?
You are what you eat: the way you eat and what you eat has an enormous impact on the quality of your life. Scientists have discovered that most successful people don’t junk food and they don’t eat too much. Healthy people eat 3 times a day, take balanced diet, eat vegetables and fruits and take a lot of water. Do you want to live long? Do you like a healthy lifestyle? Do you want to be mentally sound? If your answer is yes to these questions, then you should start eating better. Read articles on diet or see a dietician. Eating well and exercising properly has tremendous impact on your life. You are what you wear: the way you dress is the way you are addressed. As simple and as popular as this saying is, don’t be surprised that a lot of people still don’t know the meaning. What you wear should be a function of where you are going or where you are. In Nigeria for instance, if you wear a polo shirt and a pair of jeans to a wedding ceremony, people will mistake you for the cleaner or security man. Also, try to be moderate especially for the ladies, make up should be on point, perfume should not make people uncomfortable and so on. I can’t overstress the importance of proper dressing; people have passed interviews simply because of what they wore. You are what you wear. What do you wear?
You are who you say you are: I want you to know that there is a difference between opinion and truth. People form opinions about us all the time but these opinions are mostly wrong because human beings are myopic in their view. Don’t let anyone tell you who you are. Don’t let people tell you what you can or cannot do. The man who first had the idea of radio was taken for medical checkup by his friends. There is a man by the name Nick Vujicic, he was born without limbs (i.e. without hands and legs), and he has presently spoken to over three million people in over 24 countries on five continents. He didn’t allow his situation to hold him down; he didn’t allow people’s ‘sorry comments’ to hold him down. You are who you say you are. Who are you?
