What Is Fall Arrest?

The system by which saves you from falling and also helps save your life is known as fall arrest. It is one of the systems of fall protection that includes fall guarding and fall restraint. Fall guarding protects you from entering into falling prone areas like guard rails. Like fall guarding, fall restraint also protects people from falling into hazardous locations like in lanyards.

Professional in this field are gone through extensive training. Initially, a training of 8 hours is provided. If one does not pass in the first selection test, a second round of training for 8 hours is carried out. To catch a fall in a secured manner, it is important that adequate energy is already present in the system. Without sufficient energy the arrest may help in capturing but only when connected to large forces.

What Are the Components of A Personal Fall Arrest System?

If you want to own a personal fall arrest system, it is important that you know its details. A personal fall arrest system comprises of three components. They are:

  • Anchorage connector
  • Body wear
  • Connecting device

Let us know about all the components in detail.

# Anchorage or Anchorage Connector

What if you encounter a death while working at a certain height? This naturally happens in the construction industry or in the general industrial areas. This is because people tend to commit the same mistakes over and over again. The accident happens in a stepwise process – first, being inattentive to falling problems, followed by choosing the fall arrest method, then, lack of knowledge about equipment. Next comes inability to rescue workers once they have fallen, followed by improper use of equipment.

Anchorage is generally known as tie-off point. The anchorage connector is used for the purpose of joining connecting devices to the anchorage. The anchorage connector can consist of beam anchor, cross-arm strap, etc., while anchorage is the life line or scaffolding or rebar, etc. Anchorages should be able to carry a capacity of 5000 pound. This weight is calculated in terms of individuals. The anchorage should be placed on a higher position so that it does not come in contact with the person. Even if it is a lower level fall make sure that the anchorage does not touch the person. The anchorage connector should be placed in such a manner so that it prevents swing fall.

# Body Wear

Choosing a body wear is a critical job. There are many companies that do not meet safety measures. Before purchasing a full harness body wear, see that it includes a hardware, webbing and pads. Hardware must not be over sized. It should be manufactured in such a manner that it gets well-connected to the anchorage. Webbing differs from one brand to another. While choosing webbing, look at its strength. The stitch should be sturdy so that it does not tear while bearing weight. Lastly, a good padding yields to comfortable fittings. Breathable fabric is the best option.

# Connecting Devices

For connecting the whole system, a lanyard is used. It is a connective device that joins the body, harness, and belt to the place of anchorage. Lanyards can be divided into two categories: non-shock absorbing and shock absorbing. The most common and safest kind of lanyard is the shock absorbing one.Regarding the rules and regulations, it is similar to that of body wear and anchorage system.
