The type and size of pallets that you’d be using for making shipments was probably not the first thought to cross your mind when starting up in business. However, pallets are a vital part of many companies today, as they allow shipments to be sent in a safe, timely manner that is the most cost-effective and convenient for yourself and your client. But, with so many different pallet choices out there, deciding which one is the right fit for your company’s shipping needs can be trickier than many of us realize. We’ve put together some top tips to help you make the right decision.

#1. Partner Up:

First and foremost, it’s advisable to partner up with an experienced and reputable pallet provider if you’re planning to send this kind of shipment on a regular basis. For example, brands such as Gruber Pallets work together with a range of companies to provide new, recycled, wooden and plastic pallets depending on the individual client need. Partnering with a company such as this will ensure that you always have access to expert advice, helping you to save time, hassle, and money with your deliveries.

#2. Do Your Research:

Secondly, it’s a good idea to have some knowledge of the type of pallets available and the work that they are designed to do. Keep your company’s shipping requirements in place – for example, what kind of items do you plan to use the pallets for? Are you shipping light or heavy goods? How fragile are these items; is extra protection needed? Are shipping costs a major concern? How long will the pallets carrying the products be spending in transit? Being honest with your answers to all of these questions will help you put together a list of requirements to steer you in the right direction.

#3. Consider the Cost:

Saving money and cutting costs tends to be an important priority for any business, regardless of how much is available to spend. If you’re looking for a hugely cost-effective pallet option that will cost you the least, wooden options tend to come in on the cheaper end of the scale. However, this does come with some drawbacks, for example, being harder to keep clean, less resistant to insects and the elements, and often being the heaviest choice. Bear in mind that spending more on pallets could help you make savings in the long run. Plastic pallets, for example, weigh the least and could help you make bigger savings on shipping costs.

#4. Consider Your Customers:

Lastly, don’t forget to keep your clients’ requirements in mind when selecting a type of pallet to use. There’s no use in going for expensive pallets, for example, if your clients are buying lightweight products that a wooden or plastic pallet could easily handle. Don’t go for wooden pallets if they will need to be left outside for long periods of time or are likely to pose a fire hazard. It’s a good idea to include your clients in your research to help you determine the best choice for both parties.
